Guest Speaker: Andrei Kurkov

Andrei Kurkov is a Ukrainian novelist based in Kyiv who writes in Russian and Ukrainian. He is the author of more than 20 novels and 10 children’s books. His work has been translated into 42 languages. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including, most recently, the Hans and Sophie Scholl Prize (Germany) and the National Book Critics Circle Award (USA, 2023).

Discussion: Kurkov will speak about how Ukraine’s multi-lingual literature has reflected the country’s political shifts, from independence in 1991 through Russia’s ongoing war of aggression in Ukraine.
This event is part of UCSD’s “Challenging Conversations” series, Professor Frank Biess (History) will chair the event, and Professors Amelia Glaser (Literature) and Ihor Lylo (Visiting scholar in History) will serve as discussants.
