We invite you to join us for an intimate evening with Ukrainian writers Olena Huseinova and Liubov Yakymchuk. Both Huseinova and Yakymchuk are now writers-in-residence at the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program. At this event at the House of Ukraine, they will read their poems in Ukrainian.

Olena Huseinova is a Ukrainian writer, journalist, radio host, and the recipient of the literary award of the “Smoloskyp” publishing house and the All-Ukrainian Vasyl Symonenko Literary Prize for her debut poetry book. Since 2016, she has been working at UA: Radio Culture, where she heads the department of literary programs.

Olena is the author of three poetry books “Vidkrytyi Raider” (Open Rider), “Superheroi” (Superheroes), “Nichnyi Efir” (Night Air) as well as a collection of selected poems in Slovak “Spiatočný lístok” translated by Mariana Heveshi. Her poems have been published in literary magazines and anthologies, and have been translated into Polish, Slovak, Czech, English, Lithuanian, and Finnish.

Liubov Yakymchuk is a Ukrainian writer, screenwriter, journalist and cultural manager and the recipient of literary awards, including the the Kovaliv Foundation Prize for Poetry. She is a co-author of the screenplay for the documentary film “Slovo House” released in 2017.

Liubov has written “, yak MODA” (like FASHION) and “Abrykosy Donbasu” (Apricots of Donbas) poetry books. Her poems have been translated into English, Swedish, German, French, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Belarusian, Lithuanian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Armenian, and Hebrew.

This meeting with Olena Huseinova and Liubov Yakymchuk is part of the “Verses from the War” series of fall readings with Ukrainian writers.
