House of Ukraine invites you to join us in celebrating Ivana Kupala!
The Kupala festivities take place every year on the day of the summer solstice and during the shortest night of the year. The festival is filled with connecting with nature and one another through immersion in ancient traditions of singing, dancing, games, wreath-making, jumping over fires, and swimming in the water.
What to expect:
• Decorating the Kupala tree together
• Flower crown demonstration
• Singing workshop of Kupala songs
• Potluck picnic (bring a dish)
• Fire jumping
• Group singing of Ukrainian songs (bring guitars, drums, or other instruments)
• Midsummer round dances
Languages of the event: Ukrainian and English
Admission: Admission is free. We would appreciate donations to help cover the costs of hosting the event.
Schedule:
5:00 PM – 6:00 PM: Flower crown workshop, start of the communal decoration of the Kupala tree, and potluck
6:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Kupala songs, continuation of the Kupala tree decoration, and potluck
7:00 PM – 8:00 PM Fire-jumping
8:00 PM – 9:00 PM Bonfire; singing and dancing around the Kupala tree
For those interested in making a flower crown, please bring the following supplies: fresh flowers (with flexible stems), scissors, ribbons. Tetiana Verezhak will lead a hands-on workshop in the first hour of the event.
