On September 23, Svitlana Krasynska will discuss her new book 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘖𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘜𝘬𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦’𝘴 𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘭 𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺. Oleh Kotsyuba of HURI Books will host this conversation on the vital role of Ukraine’s below-the-radar civic engagement and its implications for global democracy-building. The book will be released on September 22 but is available now for early purchase from @huri.books
While civil society in Eastern Europe has long been labeled weak based on a general lack of citizen participation in formal civil society organizations, Svitlana Krasynska uses Ukraine as a case in point to reveal the vital role of below-the-radar civic engagement. By convincingly showing that informality is an essential component of civil society, the findings in 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘖𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 will help scholars, policymakers, and development practitioners determine more effective approaches to supporting democracy-building around the world.
Svitlana Krasynska is an interdisciplinary scholar studying civil society developments in contemporary Ukraine with nearly two decades of executive, consulting, and research experience in the nonprofit sector. She has been managing the MIT-Ukraine program since the fall of 2022.
