Day of Remembrance
On April 26, 1986, Reactor No. 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, located near Pripyat in the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union (now Ukraine), exploded in a catastrophic accident.
As radioactive fallout spread across large parts of Europe, authorities in Moscow attempted to conceal the scale of the disaster, proceeding with May Day parades and celebrations, exposing thousands to dangerous levels of radiation.
Today, the Chernobyl disaster is widely recognized as the worst nuclear disaster in history, with consequences that continue to affect lives and environments decades later.
We remember the courageous workers of the plant who risked and often gave their lives to contain the reactor, the innocent residents of affected regions, and all those who have suffered from the long-term effects of radiation exposure.
