About the performers:
Oleksandr Dubovenko (rhythm guitar and voice) and Konstantin Dubovenko (lead guitar) have enjoyed playing music together for almost 20 years. They mostly play classic rock covers by the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppeling, Eagles and others. They also enjoy blues and jazz improvisations. Recently Oleksandr and Konstantin added a number of Ukrainian songs into their repertoire.
Oleksandr and Konstantin also take a very active part in the San Diego Ukrainian community and provide support for Ukraine during its war with Russia. Both of them traveled to Poland in March 2022 delivering some essential humanitarian aid for Ukrainian Army. Oleksandr teaches singing at Ukrainian Saturday school and provides musical support for the rallies in Balboa park to support Ukraine every Saturday staring from February 2022. Konstantin provided Starlink and high speed Internet services for Ukrainian refugees who were crossing Mexican/US border through April 2022.
Olha Konoval is a theatrical vocalist who has been performing at Taras Shevchenko Chernihiv Regional Academic Music and Drama Theatre until recently, when Russia’s attacks on the city disrupted the operation, destroyed Olga’s home, and forced her to flee to the US. Olga was born in Chernihiv, Ukraine and has completed a degree in Musical Arts at the Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music in Kyiv. We are grateful to Olga for sharing her talent with us and connecting with the San Diego community.
Paul Filenko is a multi-instrumentalist with a broad range of experience in ethnic musical projects. Born in Kyiv, Ukraine to a musical family and growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, Paul’s musical studies included classical guitar, piano, bass, and percussion at Duquesne University, University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University. Paul lives in San Diego, CA, where he enjoys playing music throughout the community, particularly focusing on Ukrainian cultural and fundraising events.
Luke Lashchuk Miller is a bandura player and vocalist. A native of San Diego, he has been active in the local Ukrainian community his whole life. He initially learned bandura from the late Andrij Kytasty. He is a member of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus and is a cantor at the local Ukrainian Catholic parish.
Dr. Taras Filenko, pianist, historian and ethnomusicologist, is a noted scholar of Ukrainian music. A graduate of the National Academy of Music in Kyiv, Dr. Filenko served on the faculty and eventually as Associate Dean of Conducting and Voice. From the Academy, he was awarded a Ph.D. in historic musicology in 1989, and later earned a doctorate in Ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1998. For over forty years, Dr. Filenko has worked in the fields of History of Music, Ethnomusicology and Music Performance (piano, organ, and choir directing), successfully combining his work as scholar, teacher and performer. He has presented concerts throughout Europe and North America, making numerous media appearances promoting the works of contemporary Ukrainian composers.
